Brixton London: Markets, Music & the Soul of South London

Brixton is the neighbourhood that most feels like London's id — loud, colourful, sometimes chaotic, and stubbornly itself despite a decade of gentrification pressure. Its identity runs deep: it's the birthplace of David Bowie, the epicentre of the Windrush generation's contribution to British culture, and home to one of London's most alive street markets.

Brixton Market and the covered arcades behind it — Granville Arcade (now Brixton Village) and Market Row — are the anchor. They've been here since the 1930s. Today the Victorian arches house a dense mix of Caribbean grocers, African fabric shops, Afrobeat record stores, and some of London's most interesting restaurants: Franco Manca for sourdough pizza, Federation Coffee for exceptional flat whites, and Salon for modern British tasting menus upstairs. Pop Brixton, a container village nearby, adds more young food operators.

The Electric Avenue run made famous by Eddy Grant is still a working street market: fruit, vegetables, fish, and clothing at no-nonsense prices. Windrush Square at its head has a weekly market on Saturdays and hosts Brixton's community events.

Evenings in Brixton are dense with music. The O2 Academy Brixton is one of London's great mid-size concert venues; the Railway arches under Brixton station hide bars, clubs, and recording studios in layers. The Hootananny for folk and world music, and Phonox for techno and house, represent two ends of the spectrum.

The neighbourhood is best reached via Brixton tube (Victoria line). It's 15 minutes from Victoria and feels like a different city.
