Camden London: Market, Music & Alternative Culture
Camden Town is London's most colourful neighbourhood — a loud, anarchic, endlessly fascinating district where punk, goth and hip-hop subcultures converge at the world's most eclectic street market. It's gloriously uncommercial in a city that often isn't.
Camden Market
Actually a collection of connecting markets around the canal and lock: Camden Lock Market (street food, crafts, vintage), Stables Market (the best bit — horse stables converted into vintage clothing, records, antiques), and Buck Street Market. Open 7 days. Most stalls: 10am-6pm. Go on weekdays for space to actually browse.
Food at Camden Market
The world food section of the market is genuinely excellent and exceptional value: Ethiopian injera, Venezuelan arepas, Japanese takoyaki, Peruvian ceviche, Vietnamese bánh mì — all for £8-12. Eat on the canal bank.
Music History
Amy Winehouse grew up here — a bronze statue stands on Stables Market. The Roundhouse (a Victorian railway engine shed) hosts major live music. Electric Ballroom and KOKO have hosted every iconic British act since the 1970s.
