Best of London
London South Bank: Tate Modern, Borough Market & Thames Walk
The South Bank is London's cultural spine — a 3km riverside walk from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge that passes through the city's greatest concentration of arts institutions, food markets and public spaces. On a good day, it's the finest urban waterfront in Europe.
Tate Modern
The world's most visited modern art gallery — the former Bankside Power Station transformed into a vast exhibition space. Permanent collection always free (Turbine Hall installations are unmissable). The Blavatnik Building extension (opened 2016) houses terraced viewing galleries with extraordinary Thames views. Allow 2-3 hours minimum.
Borough Market
London's oldest and finest food market (trading since the 13th century). 100+ stallholders selling everything from Montgomery Cheddar and Comte to jerk chicken, Ethiopian stews and freshly shucked Lindisfarne oysters. Go hungry on a Thursday or Saturday — the market is at its most vibrant. Free to browse; budget £15-20 for lunch.
The Thames Walk
Walk west to east: Westminster Bridge → Tate Modern → Millennium Bridge → Shakespeare's Globe → Borough Market → Bermondsey → Tower Bridge. All free, flat, paved and extraordinary. Allow 2.5 hours walking without stops.
