Stonehenge & Bath Day Trip from London: The Perfect Itinerary
Combining Stonehenge and Bath in a single day from London is one of England's great travel experiences — a perfect arc through 5,000 years of British history, from the world's most mysterious prehistoric monument to the best-preserved Roman city north of the Alps.
Stonehenge (1.5 hours from London by car/bus)
The 5,000-year-old stone circle on Salisbury Plain is one of the world's great mysteries — 25-tonne bluestones transported 250km from Wales by a prehistoric society with no written language, no metal tools and no wheel. English Heritage manages the site; entry from £24 (book online, timed entry). Audio guide excellent. Best light: winter mornings when low sun cuts through the stones. Buses from London Victoria with Stonehenge Tour depart 8am; coaches from £58.
Bath (2 hours from London by train)
A perfectly preserved Roman and Georgian city — the Roman Baths (the best-preserved Roman site in northern Europe, entry £18-25) and the Royal Crescent (the world's finest Georgian terrace) are the two unmissable sights. Jane Austen connections throughout. The 90-minute soak at Thermae Bath Spa (on the site of the original Roman hot spring) is one of England's most pleasurable experiences. GWR trains from Paddington every 30 minutes (1h15m, from £15).
